"Love Medicine"-Word Entry

1. "I think he was called to second childhood like anybody else gets a call for the priesthood or the army or whatever"

2. My guess:  In the story Love Medicine, one of the character is an old man, who struggles with understanding his mistakes and don't like being corrected by another individual. Like a child he rejects and don't listen when his wife and grandson tries to help him or make him to do what is right. Basically the author explains the old man's personality as a child , because children can't differentiate between right and wrong and sometimes they show negative sanctions or gets mad when adults help is offered to them.  As people get old, their actions, thinking, and behaviors become like children, due to the slow functioning in their brain as a result of their old age, therefore this disability in old men and women is considered as a second childhood personality.

3.  Definition: "Second childhood" means when someone starts to behave like a child, especially because of mental weakness caused by old age. (dictionary.cambridge.org)

4. Explanation: Over all the meaning of "second childhood" according to my guess and dictionary is exactly the same, meaning that the author is saying that old man was behaving like a child, because he was old and it is a common mental behavior disability in old people.
