Hamlet (2000 movie)

I have been thinking about which movie version of Hamlet to do for my final project and I have a question for the class....

What do you think about the dialogue in the 2000 film adaptation of Hamlet from what we saw in class on Wednesday? Do you think keeping the language similar to the original text was a good idea or do you think the language should have been adjusted to more modern language?

Michaela,

What an excellent question. I'm truly interested in your perspective regarding this one, but I have one thing you could think about. Honestly, I think the film version needs the language/poetry to maintain some sort of connection to Shakespeare's original work. If we remove the language, sure, we still have the plot, characters, and conflicts, but do we still have Shakespeare?

I had the same thought process. Sure it would be more understandable for the audience with modern language, but then it would not be a version of Hamlet anymore, the plot would just be based on Hamlet.

I wathced the movie as well and I thought that using the Hamlet's version of the dialogue, made the entire movie confusing.Since the movie is made in the 20th century, I think they should have used the modern language.

I agree with Zakria Allam that the movie should use modern language. It doesn't sound right that people in the 20th century speak like 400 years old folks. Though use modern language may lose the beauty of Shakespeare's original work,it is also important to match the act with its chosen setting.
