For my final project I am going to compare and contrast the two paintings below not only to each other but as well as how the artist portrays them compared to how Shakespeare has them come across in his writing.
Ophelia (painting) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaOphelia (painting)
I will go about this some what the same way we did in class on Tuesday. These two pictures also have some of the same features as the ones we looked at of Ophelia in class such as she is in the middle of no where and has no one around her, and also both pictures incorporate flowers which seems to be a constantly recurring theme with Ophelia. Both of these pictures do one thing that the two we looked at in class did not, which is portray her under/in the water. Why do you think they might do that?

It's interesting to see that second picture where she is basically completely under water. I guess they do that because there doesn't seem to be any specific wording that says she floated on top of the water. I also noticed being completely under water gives her a more serene quality that translates into her emotion at the time
That's a really good point. The other thing I noticed was her hands. In the first picture she doesn't seem to be trying to swim yet her face is still above the water, like she doesn't seem worried or mind drowning. In the second picture, she has her hands together and against her heart, she looks much more 'at peace' in the second picture. It calls into question what Shakespeare had in mind as he wrote and how he would have portrayed Ophelia in a picture of this scene.
